The year is 1769, and philosopher and renowned enquirer into 'the sublime' Edmund Burke, amidst existential and financial crisis, embarks on an ill-conceived grand tour of the Alps in search of enlightenment and inspiration.
What results is an entirely eccentric period road movie: an off-kilter, comical and thought provoking deep dive into humanity’s hubris towards nature, as the arrogant and sheltered Burke is swiftly overwhelmed by the vast landscape he has attempted to tame, brutally learning that such a towering force as nature is far beyond his control and comprehension.
Grand and visually stunning, and punctuated with an absorbing comic absurdism, The Trouble With Nature reimagines Burke as a fool who believes he’s above the natural world, and in doing so offers an insight into our world and our relationship with it that is both crucial and entirely, uniquely entertaining.
