Trocadero Projects and Environmental Films Australia are teaming up to bring an environmental cinema experience to Footscray.
For five weeks across February and March, enjoy a selection of short films from Australia, New Zealand and the United States that explore humanity’s connection to country and impact on the planet.
Immersive, ethereal and irreverent, the program explores impacts of colonialism, the awe of nature and Indigenous knowledge.
Throughout the exhibit, patrons are invited to be part of the experience, by donating plants and cuttings to create a living space with us.
The program will culminate in a community screening event of ‘Yana Djamaga Ganji / Walk Good Fire’ by Clancy Walker and Adam Nye in early April (details and free tickets to be released soon). The event will include an introductory short ‘Outpicker’ by local filmmaker Le Luo. Attendees will be welcome to take home an exhibition plant with them.

In A Nut (technically a seed) Shell

A short mixed media animation about the natural cycle of almond trees.
This film highlights the disruption and alteration of the cycle via monoculture practices, leading to bee colony collapse, groundwater depletion, and habitat loss, in exchange for mass production of almond by-products.

A non-verbal documentary experience comparing the wonder of nature and the advent of man. This extraordinary cineart communicates the consequences of our industries and a reckoning with colonisation, while acknowledging the unsustainable present and allowing us a glimpse of a more sustainable, equitable future. -

The Pit

A journey into the former copper mine in Butte, Montana: the Berkeley Pit. Bear witness to what mining (and its waste) can do in film - literally!Brooks has crafted a unique experience presenting hand-manipulated original and found footage using the same contaminants that were found in the water of the Pit.
A stark reminder of the impacts of mining, providing a distorted portal to the past and striking context for our future.

Veins of the Country

Everybody."Senior Gooniyandi artist Mervyn Street shares his art and storytelling about the waters of the Warlibiddi/Margaret and Martuwarra/Fitzroy Rivers catchment, and their vital significance to the Country and people’s lives.
Through this contemplative short, understand the rhythms of water and life and what they mean in Street’s philosophical tradition and see the power of the Warlibiddi/Margaret and Martuwarra/Fitzroy Rivers not only to sustain life, but also to mediate social connections and to carry culture.
