Sleep Has Her House.
The shadows of screams climb beyond the hills. It has happened before. But this will be the last time. The last few sense it, withdrawing deep into the forest. They cry out into the black, as the shadows pass away, into the ground.

This film is experimental.
In partnership with The University of Melbourne, EFFA presents a retrospective screening of Scott Barley’s experimental masterpiece Sleep Has Her House, a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience which screened as part of our 2018 festival.
Lightning illuminates a pine forest, horses wait in the darkness, an owl watches. Shapes shift in a woodland clearing, lit by the bluish hue of the moon. In this exciting and distinctive feature debut, English visual artist Barley envelops nature in a cloak of impenetrable mystery, transcendental repose and chilling expectation.
Shot entirely on an iPhone, the film relies on minimal formal resources, ingenious camerawork, gentle movements and the compelling flow of time. This symphonic and haunting piece of exquisite slow cinema is not to be missed.
